Whenever SSH is configured on a new server it always generates a public and private key for the server, just like you did for your user.

Introduction: Known Hosts is much like how the authorized_keys file is used to authenticate users the known_hosts file is used to authenticate servers. Whenever SSH is configured on a new server it always generates a public and private key for the server, just like you did for your user.

How to generate an SSH key and add your public key to the server for authentication. Development Comments ( 2 ) SSH keys are a way to identify trusted computers, without involving passwords. The steps below will walk you through generating an SSH key and adding the public key to the server. First, check for existing SSH keys on your computer. Host keys / knownhosts files¶ class paramiko.hostkeys.HostKeyEntry (hostnames=None, key=None) ¶. Representation of a line in an OpenSSH-style “known hosts” file. Classmethod fromline (line, lineno=None) ¶. Parses the given line of text to find the names for the host, the type of key, and the key. Type yes and press the Enter key to add the server's public host key into the knownhosts file in the.ssh folder in the user's home directory. If Public-key authentication is successful, you will not be prompted for a password. If the remote host provides shell access, use the hostname command to verify that your truly logged into the SSH server.

Procedure: You can generate known_host file by two methods.

  • By Command prompt/Cygwin(tool).
  • By Cloud Platform Integration.

In my case I will explain step by step solution through Command Prompt, as you same we have to follow it for Cygwin and after that I will explain you through Cloud Integration.

  • Command Prompt:
  1. Install OpenSSHD
  2. Start menu -> run -> cmd -> ssh –V (for checking successful installation of OpenSSHD).
  3. Run Command -> ssh-keyscan –t rsa host_url/ip_address -> file name.
  4. The file will be generated.(as mentioned path. example: I navigated it to the D: drive)

Note: If you are generating known_host file for your internal server then it can create it with this procedure, because in my case I was creating it for third party SFTP and  I was able to generate known_host file but it was creating blank. If your file is creating blank follow Procedure 2.

  • Cloud Platform Integration:
  1. Open Cloud Platform Integration (tenant) through S user Id and Password.
  2. After Logged In Navigate to -> Monitoring -> Connectivity test.
  3. Select SSH Connectivity test PFB,

4) Enter the following SFTP Host URL and test it and Authentication is none and Click Send.

5) You will receive the Success Response, Click on the Copy Host Key.

6) Host Key will be copied to your clipboard, create a text file, paste that copied host key into text file.

7) Rename the file and remove its extension .txt.

8) Yes, this is now your known_host file.

Having issues connecting via SSH or SFTP? If you’re getting an error like the one below, this usually happens because IP addresses have changed and the old one is still stored in your known_hosts file which is used for SSH and SFTP connections.

Can’t Connect via SSH or SFTP – Delete SSH known_hosts

If you are having trouble connecting, first ensure you are using the correct password. You can always change your SFTP and or SSH password from within your MyKinsta dashboard.

If you are still having issues, follow the directions below to delete entries from your known_hosts file.

Mac

  1. Open up terminal and edit the following file with nano text editor.
  1. Remove all entries that start with your Kinsta IP address (found within your MyKinsta dashboard
  2. Then save the document (Ctrl+x)

Windows

If you are on Windows, it also has a similiar known_hosts file but the credentials and IP are stored in the registry.

  1. Launch regedit from your start menu. Example below is using Windows 10.
  2. Browse to the following directory:

    SshHostKeys

  3. Remove all entries that end with your Kinsta IP address (found within your MyKinsta dashboard
